Career Overview
The Sri Lanka Foreign Service (SLFS) is one of the country's most prestigious government services. Foreign Service Officers represent Sri Lanka internationally by strengthening diplomatic relations, promoting trade and investment, protecting the interests of Sri Lankan citizens overseas, supporting foreign policy, and representing the country at international organisations.
Foreign Service Officers begin their careers at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and may later be assigned to Sri Lankan Embassies, High Commissions, Consulates, and Permanent Missions around the world. They work closely with foreign governments, diplomats, international organisations, investors, businesses, and Sri Lankan communities living abroad.
Their responsibilities include preparing diplomatic reports, analysing political and economic developments, organising official visits, negotiating bilateral agreements, promoting tourism and exports, assisting Sri Lankan citizens overseas, and supporting international cooperation.
Recruitment into the Sri Lanka Foreign Service is conducted through an Open Competitive Examination followed by interviews and selection procedures announced by the Government of Sri Lanka. Due to its competitive nature, the Foreign Service is considered one of the most respected careers in the Sri Lankan public sector.
Students who enjoy international relations, politics, economics, public administration, law, languages, and leadership often choose this career.
