Become a Fire & Rescue Officer in Sri Lanka

Fire & rescue officers respond to fires, accidents, floods and emergencies — saving lives, protecting property, and conducting rescue operations. In Sri Lanka, firefighters serve with municipal fire brigades (led by the Colombo Fire Brigade), the airport fire service, ports, and industrial fire teams at factories, hotels and power plants.

Recruitment to municipal brigades is through local government notices with written tests, demanding physical fitness assessments, and medical standards. The airport's aviation fire service and industrial employers also recruit trained firefighters, with NVQ fire training and rescue certifications strengthening applications considerably.

Trained Sri Lankan firefighters are also recruited to Gulf fire services and oil/gas industry fire teams, where salaries far exceed local rates — making international fire safety certifications a valuable investment.

A fire & rescue officer responds to fire and emergency calls, operates fire appliances, pumps and rescue equipment, performs search and rescue in buildings and accidents, provides first aid, conducts fire prevention inspections, maintains equipment readiness, and educates the public on fire safety.

**Municipal fire brigades:** Typically O/L passes, age around 18–28, with demanding physical fitness tests, height and medical standards per each council's notice.

**Airport/aviation fire service:** Recruits physically fit applicants with training provided to international aviation fire standards; prior NVQ fire training is an advantage.

**Industrial fire teams:** Factories, hotels, ports and power plants hire NVQ/certificate-trained firefighters.
