Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a degree to become a film director in Sri Lanka?
No — many successful directors came up as assistant directors in advertising or teledrama. A degree helps with craft, network and overseas opportunities but is not mandatory.
How much does a director earn in Sri Lanka?
Commercial directors earn LKR 120,000–300,000/month equivalent. Feature film directors typically earn LKR 500,000–5,000,000 per film. Top international-standard directors earn far more.
Where can I study film in Sri Lanka?
UVPA (University of Visual & Performing Arts), AOD, ICBT and CINEC offer film / media programmes. Many top directors also study at FTII India or overseas schools like AFI and NFTS.
Is it hard to break into the film industry?
Yes — it takes 5–10 years of hustle. Starting as a PA or AD on commercials is the most realistic path, while making your own short films for festivals in parallel.
Can Sri Lankan directors work internationally?
Yes. Filmmakers like Prasanna Vithanage, Vimukthi Jayasundara and Asoka Handagama have all had international festival careers. OTT platforms are now opening new pathways too.
What's the difference between director and producer?
The Director makes the creative decisions. The Producer manages the money, schedule, contracts and delivery. Many first-time filmmakers do both, but they are separate craft disciplines.
