Career Overview

Solar panel technicians install, connect and maintain solar power systems on homes, businesses and solar farms. With rising electricity costs and national renewable energy targets, solar is the fastest-growing sector in Sri Lanka's energy industry — and trained technicians are in short supply.

Every month, thousands of Sri Lankan households and businesses install rooftop solar systems to cut electricity bills, while large-scale ground-mounted solar farms are expanding across the country. Solar companies compete for technicians who can install panels, wire inverters, and commission systems safely and correctly.

This is one of the newest and most future-proof trades. Technicians typically start with an electrical NVQ background plus a short solar PV certification, and can progress quickly to team leader and site supervisor roles. Experienced technicians also start their own installation businesses, and solar skills are increasingly demanded overseas as the global renewable transition accelerates.

What Does This Career Do?

A solar technician surveys rooftops and sites, mounts panel structures, installs and wires solar panels, connects inverters and batteries, tests and commissions systems, performs net-metering connections with utility standards, and maintains and troubleshoots installed systems.
