Career Overview
Military officers lead the Sri Lanka Army, Navy and Air Force — commanding troops, operating ships and aircraft, managing engineering and logistics operations, and serving in national development and disaster response. It is a career of leadership, discipline and national service with exceptional benefits.
Officer entry is competitive. School leavers with A/Ls apply as Officer Cadets and train at the respective service academies, while the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) route lets cadets earn a fully-funded degree — engineering, medicine, management, law or IT — while training as officers. Graduates can also join through direct-entry and volunteer force schemes into specialist branches.
The forces offer free professional education, housing and medical care, structured promotion, foreign training courses, UN peacekeeping deployments with attractive overseas allowances, and pension entitlements.
