Career Overview
An Interpreter converts spoken communication from one language into another in real time. Interpreters work at conferences, courtrooms, hospitals, business meetings, diplomatic events, government offices, and international organisations. Unlike translators (who work with written text), interpreters work live and must think, listen, and speak simultaneously.
In Sri Lanka, interpreters are needed in tourism, legal, medical, diplomatic, business, and government sectors. Foreign-language interpreters (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, French) are especially valuable for international meetings, embassies, and multinational companies.
Students who are fluent in multiple languages, quick thinkers, confident speakers, and skilled communicators often succeed as interpreters.
What Does This Career Do?
Interpreters listen to a speaker in one language and instantly convey the meaning in another language — either simultaneously (as the person speaks) or consecutively (after a short pause). They work in courts, hospitals, business meetings, tourism, diplomacy, media interviews and international conferences, bridging communication between people who do not share a common language.
