Career Overview
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) technicians install, service and repair air conditioners, refrigerators, cold rooms and large building cooling systems. In a tropical country like Sri Lanka, air conditioning is essential for homes, offices, hotels, hospitals and supermarkets — creating constant, recession-proof demand.
Locally, technicians work with split A/C units, refrigeration equipment and building chiller systems, with hotels and apartment complexes driving demand. Self-employed A/C technicians earn strong daily rates during hot seasons, and many build service businesses with repeat maintenance contracts.
The Middle East is the biggest opportunity: Gulf countries run massive HVAC operations in malls, towers and district cooling plants, and Sri Lankan refrigeration and A/C technicians are among the most recruited trades for the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Japan and Korea also accept HVAC-related workers through their skilled worker programmes.
What Does This Career Do?
An HVAC technician installs new air conditioning and refrigeration units, performs routine servicing and gas charging, diagnoses electrical and mechanical faults, repairs compressors and control systems, and maintains large central A/C and cold room installations for commercial buildings.
