Career Overview
Excise officers enforce the laws governing liquor, tobacco and related products in Sri Lanka — licensing and inspecting production and sales, collecting excise revenue, and raiding illegal manufacturing (moonshine/kasippu) and unlicensed sales operations. The Department of Excise is a key state revenue collector.
Recruitment to the Excise Officer grade is via a competitive examination announced by Gazette, typically for graduates, with support grades recruited at A/L level. Selection includes written exams, physical fitness standards (this is an enforcement role) and interviews.
Officers conduct raids with legal authority, investigate offences and prosecute cases — and like customs, are entitled to reward payments from detections, which can substantially increase earnings.
