Career Overview

A Building Services (MEP) Engineer designs and manages the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems that make modern buildings work — HVAC, lifts, lighting, fire protection, water supply and drainage. In Sri Lanka MEP engineers are in strong demand across hotels, hospitals, high-rise apartments and industrial projects, and internationally in the Middle East and Australia.

This is a technical, well-paid engineering career suited to students who enjoy physics, mathematics and problem-solving.

What Does This Career Do?

MEP Engineers plan how a building will be heated, cooled, powered, ventilated and served with water. They size ducts, cables and pipes, prepare shop drawings and BOQs, supervise site installation, commission systems, and coordinate with architects and structural engineers using BIM tools like Revit MEP.

Daily Responsibilities

Design HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire-fighting systems for buildings
Prepare technical drawings and specifications using AutoCAD and Revit MEP
Calculate cooling loads, cable sizes and pump capacities
Prepare BOQs and evaluate contractor tenders
Supervise installation and testing at construction sites
Coordinate with architects, structural engineers and clients
Commission systems and hand over to facility teams
Ensure compliance with CEB, NWSDB and fire regulations

Frequently Asked Questions

What A/L stream do I need to become an MEP engineer?
Physical Science (Combined Maths, Physics, Chemistry) is the standard requirement for engineering degrees in Sri Lanka.
How much does an MEP engineer earn in Sri Lanka?
Fresh graduates earn LKR 90,000–150,000. Senior MEP engineers earn LKR 250,000–400,000 and MEP project managers can earn LKR 400,000–700,000 per month.
Can I work overseas as an MEP engineer?
Yes. MEP engineers are in strong demand in UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Singapore. Overseas salaries typically range from LKR 700,000–1,500,000 equivalent per month.
Which is better — mechanical or electrical background for MEP?
Both work well. Mechanical engineers usually lead HVAC and plumbing; electrical engineers lead power, lighting and fire alarm systems. Many MEP firms hire both.
Is BIM / Revit necessary?
Yes. Modern MEP projects use BIM coordination through Revit MEP and Navisworks. Learning Revit early gives a strong career edge.
Do I need to be a Chartered Engineer?
CEng status through IESL is not mandatory to work, but it is essential for senior consultant, design-authority and overseas roles.
