Career Overview
Automobile technicians diagnose, service and repair cars, vans, three-wheelers, motorcycles and commercial vehicles. With millions of vehicles on Sri Lankan roads and vehicle imports resuming, demand for skilled technicians is stronger than ever.
The industry is changing fast. Hybrid and electric vehicles now dominate Sri Lanka's car market, and technicians trained in hybrid battery systems, EV drivetrains and computerised diagnostics earn far more than traditional mechanics. Modern vehicle repair is as much about laptops and scan tools as spanners.
Training is accessible: NVQ automobile courses at technical colleges, VTA, NAITA and private academies take 6 months to 2 years after O/Ls. Skilled technicians progress into workshop management, open their own garages, or take overseas jobs in the Gulf, Japan, Korea and Australia — where qualified auto technicians are on skilled shortage lists.

An automobile technician inspects vehicles, runs computer diagnostics, services engines and brakes, repairs electrical and mechanical faults, maintains hybrid/EV systems, and road-tests vehicles.
